Krystal Meyers is undeniably one of the rising stars in Christian pop. She’s already a sensation in Japan. Her catchy songs have been used in television promotions in the U.S. She’s a two-time nominee for the Gospel Music Award’s “Female Vocalist of the Year,” a category mostly reserved for more established, less youthful artists. And she’ll perform for thousands of teen girls this fall, as part of the Revolve Arena Tour, with Natalie Grant, Group 1 Crew and Hawk Nelson.
Her new release, Make Some Noise, underscores the why and how of Meyers’ impact.
"Many people say that my generation is a dying generation,” says Meyers, “that we're hopeless and have nowhere to go, but I don't agree. I think people are more involved. We care about the environment, social justice, politics, those in need – we care about things that are making a difference in our world. It's important for us to make an impact, but the only way you can make an impact is if you are loud about it. You can't just sit in a corner and be reserved. Live out loud! Make some noise!"
With this her third effort, 20-year-old Meyers more than holds her own – in every artistic respect – with mainstream counterparts like Gwen Stefani, Katy Perry, Avril Lavigne and Miley Cyrus. But the glittering distinction is the content of her music, the responsibility with which she handles her platform. Positive and hopeful, yet steeped in the realities young girls and women face in our over-sexed, under-loved society, Krystal Meyers takes her music career and her faith seriously, without sacrificing either.
Of course, this should come as no surprise from a young woman who wrote her first single at camp before her 9th grade year, a radical song for a girl her age. “Anticomformity” was both her first big hit and the message that has permeated her music from the beginning.
With some serious throwback to the stylized, synth pop of the ‘80s, Make Some Noise makes it clear: Krystal Meyers is a pop-icon in the making. From the hooky, grab-you-by-the-ears title track to the electro-groove of “Shine” to the more overtly faith-based lyrics of “Love It Away” and “Freedom,” Make Some Noise is sure to get both an explosive response from pre-teen and teen girls who like their music with a seriously fun beat, and a rousing ovation of approval from those same girls’ nail-biting parents, the good souls who try desperately to give their girls the freedom to dance and the wisdom to keep their clothes on and their faith intact while doing it.
You name it, if it means something in a girl’s world – self-image, romance, boy crushes, heartbreak, being overwhelmed by life, confusion, shame, the need for a savior – it’s on Make Some Noise, a project that taps all the way into and unearths a world of potential.
In fact, she’s so good that, when it’s all said and done, this girl just may be the biggest Christian-to-mainstream crossover success story ever.
