Songs of Summer

By Melissa Riddle, Senior Editorial Strategist, GospelMusicChannel.com

Here at GospelMusicChannel.com, we’re always curious about the place where music and faith intersect – that spiritual (yet very human) connection between our heads and our hearts.

So we’re always curious to talk about music...music in all its shapes and sounds; the lyrics and rhythms that draw us out of ourselves and make us feel more alive.

Starting now and all summer long, we’re talking to artists who are Christians – of all musical stripes.

What are your favorite songs of summer?

This week Inpop singer/songwriter Jimmy Needham gives GMC.com the lowdown on the songs that make his summer list. Jimmy’s much-anticipated second release, Not Without Love, releases August 19, and we couldn’t be more excited about that one. For more details on all things Jimmy, go to www.jimmyneedham.com.

1. "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)" by James Taylor

How fun is this song?! I love a little James, and summer time is when he sounds his best.

2. "Thankful" by Caedmon's Call

I'm a self admitted blue grass/folk fanatic. The percussion in this song won me over in picking it. The lyrics are so rich too.

3. "Breathing Air Again" by Robbie Seay Band

Every time I hear this song, I imagine myself with the top down of some convertible, soaking in the sun. This is truly a great summer song. If only I can find a convertible...

4. "(What A) Wonderful World" by Sam Cooke

Not to be confused with Louis Armstrong's "What A Wonderful World.” This is a fun, upbeat love song from an amazing artist. I grew up with Sam Cooke and I can't think of many other artists I would rather listen to this summer.

5. "Alone" by Tommy Sims

For the most part, this is a little-known artist, but he has got more soul in his pinky than most people do in their whole body. This song will take you back to that old ‘50s motown vibe but with a modern flavor. So fun!

6.  "Accidently In Love" by Counting Crows

Counting Crows is probably one of my favorite bands of all time. When I think summer, I think fun and upbeat. Though their lyrics are deep and thoughtful, they have a great way of writing catchy swinging songs that just make you want to dance. "Accidently In Love" is one of those songs.

7.  "The More I See You" by Michael Buble

Another throwback to the past. I am a HUGE big band fan, and nobody does it better than Michael Buble. Me and my wife dance to this one a lot.

8.  "Feelings Show" by Colbie Caillat

Really, this whole record is a summer album, but "Feelings Show" just has this groove to it that makes you just want to bob your head. I have definitely wore this song out in my CD player.

9.  "Waiting On The World To Change" by John Mayer

Mayer does modern pop soul like no one else. This song has simple instrumentation, which is why it makes such a great summer jam. Simple, tasteful and fun.

10.  "Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours" by Stevie Wonder

I saved the best for last. Hands down, the best pop song of all time, and if fun is what you are looking for in your summer music mix, look no further than Stevie's "Signed, Sealed, Delivered." Could this song get any cooler? I submit that it cannot!
