What Ever Happened to…Sarah Sadler?
Although it’s been six years since the release of singer/songwriter Sarah Sadler’s self-titled debut, music has never been far from her mind.
But simply trying to duplicate the success of her hit song “Beautiful,” a favorite of both Christian radio listeners and Hollywood movie execs who placed the song in popular T.V. shows and movies, wasn’t going to cut it. Sadler says she needed to find her true voice and make music she could believe in for the long haul.
So instead of continuing on with Essential, who she still maintains an amicable relationship with today, Sadler asked to be “let out of her contract.” And with the label’s blessing, she forged ahead as an independent artist. Teaming up with her father, popular worship writer Gary Sadler, Sarah began penning songs that better captured her style and sound for her second album Where It Started, which is more organic than the programmed pop of her debut.
It’s not that Sadler cringes whenever she listens to her songs on what she refers to as “the pink album,” but Sadler knew there were more layers to her artistry that she hadn’t yet explored.
“One of the reasons I called this record Where It Started is because I feel like it’s the one I should’ve made six years ago,” Sadler says. “But you know how hindsight is – it’s 20/20. I loved making ‘the pink album,’ but I didn’t want to make the same mistake the second time of not nailing my signature sound. I didn’t want to give in to the pressure of releasing a follow-up too quickly just to have one out. Now six years later, it’s finished, and I couldn’t be happier.”
Focusing on relationships much like she did on her debut, Sadler’s wants her songwriting to capture the real-life struggles of triumphs that everyone can relate to – including herself.
“It’s funny because my song ‘Get Yourself Together’ has really become a personal mantra, and I think others can relate,” Sarah shares. “When we first wrote it, I saw the lyric like I was telling someone else to get it together, but the more I sang it, the more the words began to take on a whole new meaning for me. And I knew right away that I was also singing to myself.”
